All set for another year of multi-lane regattas? There are changes in the air.

Summer is nearly around the corner and with it the chance to finally put whatever training you have managed this winter to the test and race side by side. There will be the usual regular 2/3 lane river regattas most weekends from the end of April through to September, but if you are aiming higher you will probably be targeting the larger multi-lane events in your build up to HRR, HWR, Nat Schools or Junior Championships. Normally that would just mean selecting your target multi-lane regattas, entering your event, waiting for the draw and then hoping you will be able to be one of the top 3 in your heat to progress to the next round (The traditional multi-lane regatta race format in the UK). But for 2014 you may need to think again, especially the seniors, or at least slightly differently, as at least 3 of the 5 pre-Henley Royal multi-lane regattas are offering different formats this year.

Wallingford regatta

All change for Senior events this year with just 3 new classes of senior events being run, Club, Challenge & Lightweight. Junior events are being run as before. Club events are open to all club entries, but not to crews who would qualify for J18 status. Challenge events will have a minimum points entry criteria set between IM3 and IM2 and are intended for crews aiming to qualify for Henley Royal Regatta. Lightweight events are offered for the Olympic crew boat categories. The minimum points for the Challenge events are: - 8+ 24 points, 4- / 4x 12 points, 2- / 2x 6 points, 1x 3 points

National Schools regatta

Championship and First eight events will run as time trials to seeded semi-finals. Girls First and Second eights will run as a single event, using the same format as above, but the fastest second eight will be awarded medals.

Metropolitan regatta

Traditional Saturday regatta, but on the Sunday they are running the Challenge Eights events alongside normal events for smaller boat classes. The Challenge events, which are open to all eights (one event each for open and women’s crews), follows the format used at the 2013 British Rowing Senior Championships. These events will each begin with a time trial. The top 32* crews in each event will proceed to an A/B, C/D or E/F semi-final on the basis of their speed in the time trial and then race for places in the A-F finals. The remaining crews will proceed directly to G or H finals on the basis of their speed in the time trial. Semi-finals and finals will be run over the full 2000m Olympic course.

The fastest open eight will be awarded the Peter Coni Cup and medals will be awarded to the crews of the fastest Elite, Senior, IM1, IM2 and IM3 eights, whatever their finish position. The fastest women’s eight will be awarded the Di Ellis Trophy and medals will be awarded to the crews of the fastest Elite, Senior, IM1 and IM2 eights.

Henley Women’s Regatta

The pinnacle of the UK Women’s rowing season. A traditional knockout, side by side, race format, though events with large entries will have to race a time trial on the Friday to progress to the knockout stage.

Marlow Regatta

Again all change for 2014. Marlow is reverting back to a single day as Dorney Lake is unavailable for hire on the Sunday. On the racing front all events will run seeding time trials for the first round. Crews then progress to the A-G finals based on their place in the time trials. The fastest 7 crews in each event will progress to the A final, the next 7 to the B final and so on. All crews will race a time trial and a final. The other change at Marlow is the splitting of the Intermediate 3 Eights into separate Club, University & School events.

Henley Royal Regatta

This is the main regatta of the summer for many Senior & Junior mens crews. Crews who have shown their speed at prior regattas can pre-qualify, the rest will have to race in the qualifying time trial races on the preceding Friday. Traditional, side-by-side, knockout races run from Wednesday through to the finals on Sunday.

The British Champs is split over 2 days, with different boat classes offered on each day. They are offering 8+, 4-, 4x & 2x in Open & Women’s classes for Seniors, Under 19 (4x & 2x) & Under 23 in open weight and lightweight. There are also BUSA University classes for 8+.
