It is with deep regret that we have to report that Sir Francis Ferris QC passed away on 26th March.

Francis became a member of the Marlow Regatta Committee in 1963 and the Management Committee in 1999, and was elected a Vice President in 2004. He attended Bryanston School, and then Oriel College Oxford, for whom he rowed at Marlow Regatta in 1953,4 & 5, and for many years he umpired at Thames region Regattas, including Marlow.

However, it was his skill during Committee meetings where his unique talents really came to the fore. When other members would struggle to grasp a complicated problem, Sir Francis was able to summarise the matter, and suggest a course of action with which all agreed.

He was also very much involved with Marlow Rowing Club, and has the unique distinction of being the only person to have held the positions of Captain (1957), Chairman (1971-86) and President (1992-2007).

It is a great loss to the local rowing scene.

For the last three years, the Thames Valley Trial Head, organised by the Committee of Marlow Regatta, and staged at Dorney Lake, has been cancelled; twice for accurate forecasts of wind which would make both trailer towing and race conditions unsafe, and once because the lake was frozen. Each year, the organisers have suffered losses, having refunded all entry fees, and paid some contractors.

For these reasons, it has been reluctantly decided not to attempt to run the event at the end of January in 2018.

It is hoped that there will be an opportunity to stage a similar event, towards the end of October, when we hope to be luckier with the weather. The Committee trusts that our regular competing Clubs will be understanding and will support the new event.
